Finding Connection on the Water This Winter

In the wheelhouse of Thames Venturer, a woman wearing a white blouse steers the boat, with a man on the left hand side in a navy long-sleeved top looks at the view through binoculars, and a man on the right hand side leans against the wall wearing a light blue polo shirt.

As the river quietens and the days draw short, winter offers us a moment to pause. It’s a time to reflect on the year gone by, to reconnect with one another, and to look ahead with hope. For the River Thames Boat Project, this season is also a reminder of why our work matters so deeply — because connection, community, and access to the calming power of nature are things everyone deserves.

For more than 35 years, we’ve been working to make the River Thames accessible to all. Every year, our two fully wheelchair-accessible boats welcome around 3,500 people on board: older adults, people living with disabilities, carers, and community groups. For many, these cruises offer more than just a scenic journey; they’re a lifeline of friendship, rest, and renewal.

Whether it’s the gentle rhythm of the water, the wildlife that flits along the banks, or the simple pleasure of sharing a cup of tea with others, the Thames has a way of bringing calm and connection to everyone who steps aboard.

A Season for Togetherness

While winter can sometimes feel like a season of hibernation, it’s also an opportunity to reconnect — with nature, with others, and with our communities. For our passengers and volunteers, those connections often begin on the water.

Our therapeutic Linking People Afloat cruises give individuals the chance to experience the Thames in a small, welcoming group. With the support of our friendly volunteers, passengers can enjoy a picnic lunch, warm drinks, and a chance to share stories while the river winds quietly by. Many tell us they leave feeling lighter, more peaceful, and more connected — both to others and to themselves.

It’s these simple, shared moments that sit at the heart of everything we do. The sense of belonging that can come from a day on the river often lasts far beyond the cruise itself.

The Power of Community

Behind every journey on our boats is a dedicated team of volunteers, supporters, and Friends. They give their time, energy, and generosity to help keep our work afloat — quite literally.

Our volunteers are the beating heart of the River Thames Boat Project. Some start as crew and go on to become Mates or Skippers, learning new skills and building confidence along the way. Others join our Education Team, sharing their knowledge of the river’s ecology with local children and young people. Many of our volunteers tell us that they gain as much as they give: new friendships, a sense of purpose, and the joy of being part of something meaningful.

If you’ve been thinking about trying something new this year, volunteering could be the perfect way to begin. We offer flexible opportunities, whether you’d like to be on the water or support us behind the scenes. It’s a wonderful way to spend time outdoors, meet like-minded people, and make a real difference in your community.

Becoming a Friend of the Thames

Not everyone can volunteer their time — but there are still plenty of ways to be part of our story. Becoming a Friend of the River Thames Boat Project is one of the most impactful ways to support our work.

Friends help us continue to offer accessible cruises and educational activities for those who need them most. In return, they receive our exclusive quarterly newsletter, invitations to social events (including special cruises), and the satisfaction of knowing their support helps to bring the magic of the Thames to thousands of people each year.

Joining our community of Friends means joining a movement — one that believes everyone, regardless of age or ability, should have the chance to enjoy time on the river.

Looking Ahead to 2026

As we begin a new year, our thoughts turn to the months ahead. The days will soon lengthen, the water will shimmer in spring light again, and our boats will once more be filled with laughter, conversation, and the gentle hum of connection.

We’re excited to welcome back familiar faces and meet new ones — passengers, carers, volunteers, and supporters who all share in our mission to make the Thames accessible to all. Every conversation, every donation, every hour volunteered helps us continue to create these moments of joy and inclusion.

Community is at the heart of what we do — not just on board, but across the network of people who make it all possible. Together, we can ensure the River Thames remains a place of peace, beauty, and belonging for everyone.
