Veterans aged 25–55 who are physically able to board and work on boats. No previous boating experience required

About the course

Training takes place aboard Thames Discoverer, RTBP’s fully accessible 65-foot passenger vessel.

During the programme you’ll receive practical instruction in:

  • Boat handling and crew skills
  • Safe working practices
  • Mooring and lock operation
  • Working as part of a crew
  • Introduction to inland waterways operations

The course combines elements of the RYA Competent Crew syllabus with RTBP’s own deck hand training.

Training is delivered by Glenn Collins, an MCA Boatmaster, RYA Yachtmaster and Inland Waterways Instructor, supported by experienced RTBP skippers.

Who can apply?

This programme is open to veterans who:

  • Are aged between 25 and 55
  • Are physically able to board boats and work around moorings and locks
  • Have an interest in learning practical boating skills
  • Are considering future opportunities within the inland waterways sector

No previous boating experience is required.

What happens after the course?

All participants will receive a Certificate of Completion.

We expect participants to achieve the RYA Competent Crew Certificate during the course.

Those who demonstrate the appropriate aptitude may also be invited to complete an additional assessment towards the RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman Certificate, which is fully funded.

For a small number of participants wishing to pursue commercial boating, there may also be an opportunity to continue training through RTBP’s Boatmaster development programme.

As this is a pilot project, progression opportunities will be discussed individually during the course.
